The Solar Sailors
Health and Wellness
Every person who serves on a solar sailor has emergency medical training. Every ship that makes interplanetary travel also hosts at least one medically trained crew member. Most medical needs, even minor surgery can be accomplished through a combination of the ships medical database and the BMT-1850 (bio-multi-tool) which can accomplish nearly 2000 individual medical procedures, from sealing minor cuts to removing foreign objects. Standard practice for more serious injuries is to pace the affected person into a medically induced coma and set them in a storage area with low-g or null-g.
Psychological needs are met through a combination of theological needs and basic entertainment. Books, movies, and games are all available in the ships computer memory, and are updated at each port. It is considered part of the H&W rotation’s job to use ships resources to purchase material that best suits the tastes of individual crew members and the crew as a whole. Larger psychological problems, such as emergent pathologies, and stress induced limitations can be covered within the ships medical database. However, conditions that become too limiting are grounds for immediate dismissal from a ship’s crew. The capacity to put up with the rigors of space travel is a key element that makes a separates a sailor from their terrestrial contemporaries.
Most theological needs are met with the components necessary being brought aboard by the adherents themselves. However, those needs that require an adherent to receive clerical council cannot be substituted, even over long range communication. It is for this reason that most religions have accepted Special Dispensation. This is a common tenant of faith that allows the H&W crewmember to serve as a cleric for the purpose of providing whatever service is required.
